The photographs of women confined behind bars is not a old or new premise, just go to the Red Light District in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, women are stilled forced to be objects of desire locked in cages. Their only purpose is to please the master. These women represent a fantasy for many men. They are different from what the men expect-exotic and exciting. They are within reach, but must be overcome by passing through the bars. They are waiting just for these men.
Stoler's study of the relationships between European men and indigenous women sheds light on how the desire for exotic women was consummated and then spread. For example, The Dutch Trading Company decided to limit European women from immigrating, so that the men would form families with local women and be more inclined to stay. But because their marriages and children weren't white, the indigenous women still remained subordinate as the other. One can sexually conquer the other, but to recognize their equality is impossible. Sexuality was a weapon of control for both the European men and colonized women
